Gather Documents
When you call, it may be helpful to have:
- Legal name of the person on the account
- Their mobile phone number
- Date of birth
Depending on your request, we may also need:
- Photo of death certificate
- Photo of your ID
Our customers have shared that it can be helpful to keep a loved one’s line or account active for a short time for several reasons. Here are a few things to consider:
- Contacts. Are there people who may still use this number to reach you? Keeping the line active ensures you can stay in touch with people important to your loved one.
- Voicemails and texts. Many want to save voicemail greetings/messages as a reminder of their loved one’s voice or their favorite text exchange. Keep access to both until you have time to save and share the files as you would like. For help on how to save voicemail messages click HERE.
- Digital details. Are there social media, banking, or other important accounts/apps that you need to transfer access to? Keep your loved one’s line active until you can update the contact information with what you would like to use long term.
- Security. If your loved one had banking or email accounts or subscriptions tied to their number, keeping it active ensures you can still receive security codes to access important information while handing their affairs.
What you choose to do with your loved one’s line or account is your decision, and we’re here to support you. Call (888) 345-5509.
Frequently Asked Questions
We can close the account whenever you need, and in most cases, no documentation is needed. However, if you request to backdate the closure, our billing department may need a copy of the obituary or death certificate.
By default, the service can remain active until the end of the current billing cycle. If someone wishes to take over the account and you need more time, you can request up to 14 days into the next bill cycle. To transfer ownership of the account, we will need the following documentation:
- For the new account holder, a copy of the front of one of the following: State Drivers’ License, State ID card, Passport.
- A photo of the new account owner holding that ID.
- A copy of the death certificate OR documentation of incapacitation, such as a court order or power of attorney.
Of course. You can transfer ownership of the account by providing the Consumer Cellular billing department by requesting a transfer and providing the following documentation:
- For the new account holder, a copy of the front of one of the following: State Drivers’ License, State ID card, Passport.
- A selfie of the customer holding that ID.
- A copy of the death certificate or obituary OR documentation of incapacitation, such as a court order or power of attorney.
The account holder or their estate is responsible for any charges incurred through the end of the billing cycle in which the account is canceled, including any remaining EasyPay balance. If the account is being closed, we can accept payment from someone not listed on the account.
For all accounts, charges are valid through the end of the billing period in which the account is cancelled. If the account holder is deceased and the caller disputes the validity of the charges (for example, the calls were not made on the line or someone previously called in to cancel the account), we will need a copy of the death certificate.
