voicemail 101

Everything you need to know about voicemail

There's two main types of voicemail. Which type you have will largely depend on your device. Here's the two types:

traditional voicemail: this option requires you to dial into your voicemail inbox and follow the prompts to create a greeting, listen, save, delete and more.
visual voicemail: visual voicemail allows you to see your messages on-screen as text, plus listen, delete, save, share and more.

Note: Steps may look slightly different depending on your phone model and Android version.

  1. Open the Phone app: Tap the three dots (More) in the corner, then select Settings > Voicemail.
  2. Begin setup: Choose Voicemail setup or a similar option. Enter your voicemail number if required.
  3. Create a password: Follow prompts to create a secure password or PIN.
  4. Record your greeting: Tap Record greeting, press Start or Record, then speak clearly. Save when satisfied.
  5. Access and manage messages: Return to the Voicemail section of the Phone app. Tap messages to play, delete or call back.

Bonus Pro Tip: You may also be able to access your voicemail by opening the Phone app, then pressing and holding the 1 key on the keypad to call your voicemail service.

  1. Open the Phone app: Tap the green Phone icon, then select the Voicemail tab at the bottom right.
  2. Start setup: Tap Set Up Now (if this is your first time). Otherwise, tap Greeting at the top right.
  3. Create a voicemail password: Enter a secure password and tap Done, then confirm it. If you’ve previously set up voicemail, you won’t have to complete this step again.
  4. Choose your greeting: Select Default to use the standard iPhone voicemail message. Select Custom to record your own greeting. Tap Record, speak clearly, then tap Stop. Listen back and tap Save if you’re happy.
  5. Check messages anytime: In the Voicemail tab, tap on any message to play, delete, or save it.

Bonus Pro Tip: Some iPhones offer Live Voicemail, a feature that lets you automatically see a real-time transcription as someone is leaving you a message. To turn on Live Voicemail, go to Settings > Apps > Phone. Tap Live Voicemail and then turn it on.
